The Other Side of Dr. Xeno's Brain

It's me, Dr. Xeno. Here are lecture notes and ideas for my work teaching physical and cognitive development across the lifespan (HDEV 3101) at the Department of Human Development at CSU, East Bay. This content is often referred to as mind-brain, mind body connection, brain and behavior; but it is really about the knowledge derived from the related fields of neurology, neuropsychology, neuroscience and cognitive science. Sometimes I just write about my kids or bike racing. Feel free to comment!

Kai in a Tree:

This is Kai, learning to climb a tree. What a great age, three, except for the bed time drama. Also, he is FINALLY starting to pedal his trikes & bike again. He got so frustrated with not reaching the pedals he just gave up and decided he'd scoot Fred Flintstone style. Photo by Mommy.

there is that cute little guy! He has good negotiating skills already. They get better at it as they get older.

Hey X,

Take the pedals off his bike and the training wheels and let him 'Fred Flitstone' all he wants. That's what I did for Morgan and she learned to ride quickly and painlessly. They learn the balance first then the pedal part.

If he's motivated he'll learn in a snap.

Climbing trees is good too!

Yea, I second MB's proposal.

1 part no pedals + 1 part courage and desire = a 4 year old riding a bike.

My co-worker tried this with her son last weekend and within the hour he was riding with pedals and without training wheels.

Oh yeah, I'll try to do the bike mod this weekend for balance training. I think he is at standover height now. He IS a little climber - was scrambling allover the rox last weekend.

p.s. Got 3,000 pix of the guys, so I'll keep them flowin'.
